The Peace Alliance & Bill

The Gift of Peace is a three part project which aims to educate, inspire civic action, and draw media/grassroots support towards the establishment of a US Department of Peace and Nonviolence.

Kicking off a cross country tour on January 26th 2007, the new play The Gift of Peace traveled from Los Angeles to Washington D.C., supporting the non-partisan legislation currently in Congress to create a national, cabinet-level Department of Peace. We made stops in Phoenix, Albuquerque, Oklahoma City, Dallas, New Orleans, Atlanta and Lynchburg along the way to our final performance on February 2 at the Department of Peace Conference in D.C.

On Wednesday February 28th, 2007, in Los Angeles, a group of high profile performers, including Shohreh Aghdashloo, Ed Asner, Barbara Bain, Amy Brenneman, George Coe, Wynter Daggs, Francesca Eastwood, Frances Fisher, Jesse Garcia, Sumi Haru, Paul Herman, Peaches Johnson, Dan Lauria, Kent McCord, Wendie Malick, Jack Merrill, Esai Morales, Jim Pickens, Amy Smart, Elayn Taylor, J. Karen Thomas and Houshang Touzie were directed by Tony Award Winner John Rubenstein in a reading of the play. The evening raised awareness, funds, media attention and welcomed The Gift of Peace Project tour back home.

The entire process has been documented by Emmy nominated, DGA Award winning director Tasha Oldham. The film will explore whether everyday people can inspire a change in the direction of our country at this time in American history. A separate short film, entitled "The Voices of America", taken from interviews shot with everyday people we met on our cross country tour, was presented to all members of Congress during the National Department of Peace Conference as part of our lobbying efforts.
